Working The Niche: Top Choice With Internet Marketers

To begin an online business does not require a large financial
investment. You can start part-time working from home. There
is no need for investing in potentially risky product development.
If you have an expertise in practically anything you can produce
an ebook, put up a website to promote it and at the same time
promote products produced by others.

The modern door-to-door salesman, by way of the internet has
access to millions of doors.

Another attractive reason that draws people to a work-at-home
job or small business is the fact that they don’t need to
incorporate….a sole-proprietorship does nicely. One person
working from one computer these days can accomplish the same
things that once required many people working many hours to
accomplish. A sole-proprietorship business isn’t required to file
separate tax returns or pay any special taxes on income that is
earned in the way that a corporation, an llc or even a partnership
business is required to do. The taxes levied on a
sole-proprietorship business are just for personal income.

With that said, keep in mind, a sole-proprietorship is a fine way
to start. Once the business is flowing I would look at forming an
LLC. Just a reminder, I’m not a Lawyer or Tax Consultant and
you should seek professional advice before making your decision.

The Internet isn’t called “The Information Super Highway” for
nothing. A person can make a very good living selling nothing
but information on it. The populations of every industrialized
nation in the world have learned that if you want to know
anything about anything, you get on a computer and ask the
question. They have also learned that you must pay for special
information and they are more than willing to do just that.

A person who has special knowledge of a subject and could
be considered a ‘guru’ has a market for selling that information
on the Internet. All that needs to be done is to set up a website,
publish the information, advertise and sell the information. It’s
a wonderful concept and information is a wonderful commodity.
There is no inventory to maintain and no shipping or handling
costs involved to deliver the product. If your product is digital.
Everybody gets what they want. The seller gets paid for
delivering information to a person who wants that information…
everybody is happy.

There are so many advantages of working from home for the
individual as well as for owners of large businesses that it is
truly the way that ‘work’ will be done more and more in the
future.

Last article we went over what niche marketing is not.
In this issue we are going to go over why niche marketing is
one of the best ways to be successful online.

It’s been called the last great frontier for the home based business
entrepreneur. Not sure I agree with that totally, as new technologies
are developed new opportunities become available. We are seeing it
now with RSS and emerging mobile devices, cell phones, blackberrys.
However; even with the new tech devices, you still need a niche market.

In the ‘real’ world, the home based internet marketing business
does not have a fair chance, or should I say an equal chance, of
competing against giant international corporations. The Internet has
leveled the field for the home based internet marketing business.

There now exist an equal opportunity on the internet for those who
are willing to use it. There are numerous ways to make
use of niche marketing and succeed. The majority have the same basic
requirements; choosing a domain and a webhost, building web pages and
adding content.

Those are just the basic minimum needs for Internet Marketing in any
form. Then you begin employing the choices in building
a successful niche marketing site that will hopefully provide you
with a profit….maybe a very large profit.

1. Informational products can be articles, reports, columns, audios,
videos and or a combination of any or all of the above.
These can be sold as stand alone products or used for advertisement
or promotional causes.

2. A content rich website that you build can be so interesting it
will draw potential customers again and again.

3. Newsletters and ezines that you publish full of pertinent
information will have your customers happily pay for subscriptions
to information they want or need.

The methods above are just a sample of the many ways you can use
niche marketing to create a profitable home based internet marketing
business.

Whatever method you choose you will find these two things in common.

First, the topic must be one that helps people solve a problem,
makes them healthier, happier, or provides them with
information that they want or need in some way.

Second. the content of the website, no matter the topic, must be
relevant, timely and interesting to the people who are reading
it and the website must be easily navigated.

Building your niche business can be time consuming, but compared
to starting a “brick and mortar’ business, the time is negligible and after
the site is up and running the time requirement is far less.

What Niche Marketing Is Not
By TK Edwards

Niche marketing is not about selling your product or service
to every customer in the world. Running a home based business
as a smallbusiness person you do not have a multi-million dollar
advertising budget. It’s just not possible.
You can, however; use a home based business or home based
internet marketing business to sell a good idea to a smaller
targeted audience using niche marketing.

Niche marketing is not about competition. Competition
is taken out of the equation when you do niche marketing. You
are not out with the masses of a million other people trying
to sell the same thing to the same multitude.
Your audience is specific, you are selling to the specific audience
that you have created for yourself with your opt-in email list.

Niche marketing is not about converting a new customer every
day of the week. As you build your list, you can sell to
the same people time and time again. By taking as much time
as you need and putting forth enough effort to get to know the
people who make up your list of buyers you build a trusting
relantionship, provided of course you always deliver and provide
value the customer recognizes, they will continue to buy from
you and even seek out your product offers.

Niche marketing is not about looking at the big picture. It
is about focusing on the small picture and the smaller the better.
Narrowing your niche down to a very specific part of a larger
market assures you of gaining a fair market share of that small
part. The world is a big place and there are billions of people.
You only need an infinitesimal portion of the population to have
a huge list of potential buyers of your products or services.

Niche marketing is not about seeing only the impossibilities.
Niche marketing is only about looking closely at the possibilities.
Small possibilities converted to sales will equal big profits for
your home based business or home based internet marketing business.

We all know eBay has millions and millions of products in every
niche market. Well, now there is a brand new eBay affiliate tool
called Build A Niche Store which enables you to finally take
advantage of and profit from the eBay marketplace. Not from selling
millions of products but from focusing on a profitable niche.
It’s so easy it only takes 30 minutes to set up a new store in any niche.

In the last article we talked about how to research and find
your niche online. In this article we are going to look at how
to find and solve problems in your chosen niche.

Niche marketing at its best helps to solve real problems that
real people live with everyday. If you can come up with a
product or service to promote in a niche market that will help
people solve their problems then you will have a money making
niche market website and can quickly build a long list of
potential customers.

The things that people view as ‘problems’ run the gauntlet of
possibilities… everything from a hang nail to a golf swing to
a chronic disease are people problems that they are looking
for help to solve.

A good way to find out what people consider a problem is to
visit the online forums. People talk about anything and
everything online. They discuss subjects that they wouldn’t
talk about with their best friends for the simple reason that
they can remain anonymous. They look for solutions online for
the very same reason. By visiting forums and taking note of
what people are most concerned about you can search the
Internet for products and services that will help them solve
those problems. Gather the information about the topic.

Write or have written for you articles about the topic. In this
way you can find a topic and build a content-rich website for
niche marketing that helps with the problem you have
identified and that will serve the needs of people.

An additional way to use forums to help you build a niche
market website is to join a forum, identify the problem being
most often discussed, post a question that will produce many
responses and use those responses to write an e-book on
the topic. The fact is that many people will buy an e-book that
is filled with information they could actually gather for
themselves. Is this OK, of course it is, you are being paid
for the time you spent gathering the information and putting it
into a presentable format. You are saving the customer
hours and hours of research.

They will also purchase e-books that will tell them what other
people with the same problem they have think about or are
doing about their common problem.

Comparing Niche Marketing and Internet Marketing
By TK Edwards

The Niche Marketing Series

As we went over in the last article the term ‘niche marketing’
means selling a specific product to a specific type of buyer.
In this article I’ll compare niche marketing to its far more
competitive cousin: marketing in an internet marketing niche.
Niche marketing is a much easier way to start a home based
internet marketing business.

Much as you consider apples and oranges as fruit; you can compare
niche marketing and marketing in an internet marketing niche.
They may both be fruits, so to speak, but not from the same tree.

Here’s an example just to be sure you understand the difference.
With a niche market you may have a website, a newsletter and be
selling an ebook on beekeeping. Your customers would be beekeepers
and they have no interest in SEO tweaks to the site or the
conversion rate of the salespage. If internet marketing is the
niche you are working, then you could sell an ebook on how to make
money on the internet.

A mistake that many beginning home based internet marketing
businesses make is in using internet marketing as their niche.
How do you teach people to be sucessful on the internet, if you
are not sucessful yet yourself.

Most niche markets are more open to the latest marketing
strategies, as well. Small niche markets are not over stocked
with gurus and wise men and are much easier for the beginning
marketer to break into. A niche market allows you to promote
your own niche product or that of a niche affiliate product.

There is a niche market for anything and everything you can
imagine. All it takes to break into a niche market is a good
idea, a good product created by you or someone else that will
appeal to certain people, some advertising and the desire to
succeed.

The Internet marketing niche, on the other hand, means that you
will be promoting your own Internet marketing product. This is a
very crowded field of endeavor and really difficult to break into.

It’s a world filled with gurus and wise men who have been playing
and winning the game for a long time. This doesn’t mean that it
is impossible to cash in on the Internet marketing niche because,
of course, you can. It is a world still built on demand and that
means that if you have a product that can compete and if you
have the willingness to play hard ball with the big boys then you
can succeed at the Internet marketing niche game. Just be
aware that there are easier niche market nuts to crack.

From Hobby Writing to Profitable Business in 10 Steps
by Beth Fowler

Does the idea of turning your writing hobby into an income-generating business get you excited? Has your writing-related income reached a plateau and you’re looking for ways to net more zeroes in front of the decimal point when you tally up your annual income? If you answered, “You bet!” then it’s time to start running your writing as a business, not a hobby. The IRS http://www.irs.gov/ lists 10 factors to distinguish between a business and a hobby. Among those factors is this: “Whether you change your methods of operation in an attempt to improve profitability.” Following these 10 steps can improve the profitability of your writing.

1. “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan” holds true for small businesses, including writing. A plan is a roadmap to profitability. The success rate of businesses that do write business plans is roughly 80%. Writing a plan forces one to think of opportunities and obstacles, strategies and markets. Dig into How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan by David E. Gumpert and Instant Business Plan by Gustav Berle and Paul Kirschner. Sites with business plan recommendations and examples include http://www.office.com/ and http://www.sba.gov/

2. Note the advice of authors who run successful businesses. Books to check out include $ix Figure Freelancing (http://tinyurl.com/a2y4j) by Kelly James-Enger, The Well-fed Writer (http://tinyurl.com/8xzfr) by Peter Bowerman, Writing for Quick Cash (http://tinyurl.com/73fgr) by Loriann Hoff Oberlin, The Renegade Writer (http://tinyurl.com/bwsef) by Linda Formichelli and How to Become a Fulltime Freelance Writer (http://tinyurl.com/94y2k) by Michael A. Banks.

3. Glean inspiration, information and winning tactics from books written for entrepreneurs - Six-Week Start-Up (http://tinyurl.com/83oq7) by Rhonda Abrams, Guerilla Marketing (http://tinyurl.com/ddr2d) by Jay Conrad Levinson and You Can’t Teach a Kid to Ride a Bicycle at a Seminar: The Sandler Sales Institute’s 7-Step System for Successful Selling (http://tinyurl.com/8zb7o) by David H. Sandler. Look into The Home-Based Business Kit: From Hobby to Profit (http://tinyurl.com/7eskv) by Diana Brodman Summers. Visit your state’s official website to get the proper forms for starting a business.

4. Negotiate (or have an agent or attorney negotiate) rights advantageous to you while keeping you in good standing with reputable editors and publishers. It’s in the publisher’s interest to obtain as many rights as possible, and it’s in your interest to keep as many rights to your work as possible. According to Writer’s Market, first serial, foreign language, foreign English language, audio, and electronic rights are negotiable. Every right you retain is a product you’re entitled to sell. Find info about contracts at The Authors Guild (http://www.authorsguild.org) and The National Writers Union (http://www.nwu.org). Get basic copyright information at (http://www.copyright.gov).

5. “Many times we love to do something, but that doesn’t mean we love the process we have to go through to enable us to do that thing and make money,” says a career coach. Increasing net earnings from writing requires scribes to engage in non-writing activities. Hone skills to market, advertise and sell your writing. Develop the discipline to track income and expenses. Demand a good day’s work of yourself.

6. Sell more to your current clientele. Editors who bought your writing before are likely to buy from you again. They know they can count on you to provide interesting, informative material in a timely, professional manner. Every article I’ve sold this year has been to editors who’ve been buying my work for years. Hmmm… it’s time for me to follow L. Peat O’Neil’s advice in Travel Writing (http://tinyurl.com/9dcgz).

7. “Few writers start at the top,” O’ Neil said. “Find your own level, work in it, then work up out of it… start with your local publications.” Build credibility and a clip file of your published works. Then “aim higher as you sharpen your writing skills and get to know what various editors want.” You’ll earn higher fees from higher-level markets.

8. “Sell solutions, not products or services!” Ray Potter says. Potter is a volunteer counselor at SCORE (http://www.score.org), an affiliate of the Small Business Administration (http://www.sba.gov). First identify the customer’s need or problem. Second, identify a product or service that makes the problem go away. Third, create a business that zaps the problem the way the customer wants it zapped. Identify publishers’ needs by studying their websites and entries in reference books. American publishers are listed in Writer’s Market (http://tinyurl.com/dxc83), British publishers in Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook (http://tinyurl.com/7gx85), and Down Under’s in The Australian Writer’s Marketplace (http://tinyurl.com/8c646).

9. Identify other organizations’ needs and problems by reading their materials or noticing a lack of written materials. Click http://www.elance.com where businesses and individuals post requests for academic papers, college admissions documents, copywriting, creative writing, editing and proofreading, grant writing, press releases, articles, speeches and more. Visit http://www.writerswrite.com/buscomm for business communications resources.

10. Create an income stream. Rudy Aukshun proposed a biweekly opinion column written from his senior citizen perspective. The local newspaper editor OK’d the idea. Marie Heil, an expert on guns, writes regularly for three special interest magazines. Her reputation earns her plum assignments and speaking engagements. Trade and niche publications prefer relying on regular contributors rather than gambling on writers unknown to them.

Dun & Bradstreet cite “Mistaking a business for a hobby,” as one of the most common contributing reasons for the 70% to 80% failure rate of small business start-ups. Operate your writing activities as a business and you’ll defy those odds. Writers who are serious about getting paid treat their beloved avocation as a vocation.

Niche Marketing, Just What Is It?
By TK Edwards

Everybody uses the term niche marketing, but unless you really
understand what it is you will have a difficult time being successful
with it.

The word ‘niche’ is defined as: “A special area of demand for a
product or service”. ‘Marketing’ is defined as: “The opportunity
to buy or sell”. Putting the two words together, niche marketing
means buying or selling a product or service in a special area
of demand. Keypoint being area of demand. What that really
means is that a product or service is being sold to the people
who are most interested in that particular product or service
and not to the world in general.

You will see big businesses use niche marketing everyday.
An example being, a company that makes computers and
computer accessories may advertise an all-in-one
copy/printer/scanner to the home computer user while
at the same time advertising a single function machine to
large businesses.

One of the reasons niche marketing is so attractive to sellers
is that their advertising budgets go further. It costs less to
advertise to a specialized market than it does to advertise to a
broad market.

Niche marketing is designed to meet the unique needs of
the targeted audience. Niche marketers must tailor their product
to meet those unique needs. If, for example, you have designed a
product to make gourmet cooking easy enough for the untrained
professional to do it, those who want to be gourmet cooks will be
most interested in your product. Those who like to eat out would
not.

In essence, niche marketing is selling a product or service to those
who want or need the product the most.

Finding the right niche for what you have to sell isn’t really all that
difficult. Just think about who the people are who would be most
interested in what you have to sell.

Research, before you decide which niche market to dive in to.
You will want to make sure that the market clearly defined and
reachable. You will also want to find out as much as possible
about your potential customer. Details such as what they like to do,
what they like to read and what groups they may like to be a part of.

- What kind of trade articles or books do they read?
- Do clubs or organizations exist for the particular niche?
- Does the group have an insane passion for their hobby or topic?
- Do they eat, sleep, and breathe their hobby?
- Do they actively seek more information related to their subject?

Ask yourself, is the market small enough that you won’t have
too many competitors, but still large enough for you to make a
good profit?

Most of all does the market have the money to spend?

Doing research related to these questions will help you pick
the perfect niche to market to. Look for future articles where I will
go more into how you can research and pick a profitable niche.
In the mean time keep the questions above in mind when your are
trying to choose a new niche market.
